A year and a half ago, illustrator Ben Hed uploaded a new comic to his Instagram account. In it, a kitten named Pixie took a foster brother – Brutus, the retired military dog. The internet instantly fell in love with the adorable duo, so Ben decided to dedicate a whole series of their little fun adventures.

“Honestly, Pixie and Brutus were just another random comic idea I had when I was at work. “I never planned to make them a series,” Hed told Bored Panda in a previous interview. “I just thought it would be a funny idea to introduce a cute little kitten to a big war dog “So I made the first cute animal comic Pixie and Brutus and people liked it so much that I kept making them.”

Of course, the series is much more than its main characters. The supporting cast is wonderful, the storytelling is exciting and the art is beautiful. But the complex, opposite polar stars of the show take it to another level. “Pixie is a small, cheerful, energetic kitten,” introduced the beloved cat Ben. “She is innocent and also somewhat oblivious to the serious and dangerous things about her.”

Brutus, by contrast, is a large German Bar, with a scarred face. “He was adopted by the owner of Pixie after retiring as a Military Working Dog (MWD). Brutus, in many ways, is the exact opposite of Pixie. He has seen things. He is a very serious and intimidating military dog, but he has a soft spot for Pixie and does everything he can to protect him from the harsh realities of the world around them.

Keeping demand from such a large army of fans may put pressure on some, but instead, Hed has used it to push himself as an artist even more, saying: “I worry about the performance of each comic, “But I was worried about that before I created. Pixie and Brutus too.” After that interview, his Instagram followers grew significantly, which he said does not cease to amaze.
