Nordic humor is often seen as a little dark in relation to the rest of the world. Especially if you think of Iceland, the most densely populated country in Europe is covered in glaciers and still erupting volcanoes. As Hugleikur Dagsson, a famous local cartoonist, said, “Iceland is too cold, too gloomy and too expensive,” and his funny and quirky drawings really show this.

As the artist states on his website, he “breathes air and makes jokes” since birth. The writer and comedian has published about 20 books, including Is That Some Kind of Joke? And I hate dolphins and The Popular Hits. His sense of brow-puffing comedy isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you find it interesting, this is the place for you.

Besides creating animations and publishing books, Dagson has also written three plays and motion pictures for a TV show. Also, he still finds time to do stand-up comedy and participate in episodic art projects. He joins all of his talents to create animations full of wit and some of the most controversial topics out there.

Bored Panda reached out to the artist to talk a little more about his inspiration, the way Icelanders see the world, and what his new projects are. When asked about his sense of humor and why he is often identified with Iceland, Dagson said that Icelanders, like all other nations, are shaped largely by their landscape, weather, and language. “So, we are tough, weird, and unpredictable. As is our sense of humor.

“Also, we have always been desperate as a nation. We are constantly looking for validation from the rest of the world and I feel like that seeps into our comedy,” he explained. For Dagsson, humor is a coping mechanism: “I use comedy to deal with both my own problems and the problems of the world. It is very therapeutic to point out the horrors of life and laughter.
